How do I show up for "near me" searches in my town?
"Plumber near me" is the search that matters most for a local trade. Here is what actually determines whether you appear for it.
"Plumber near me." "Roofer near me." These are the highest-intent searches a local contractor can appear for - the homeowner has a problem and wants someone close, now. Showing up for them is not luck. It is the result of specific, mostly free things, and most contractors are missing at least one.
How "near me" actually works
When someone searches "near me," Google uses their location and shows the closest, most credible, most relevant businesses - mostly in the map pack, the three results with pins at the top. You do not need to rank for the whole region. You need to be a strong option for the homeowners physically near you.
What determines whether you show up
- A complete, verified Google Business Profile. No profile, no pin, no "near me" appearance. This is the foundation and it is free.
- The right primary category. "Plumber" matches "plumber near me." "Contractor" is too vague to match cleanly.
- Proximity and service areas. Set your service areas honestly. You will show strongest to homeowners actually near you - which is exactly who you want.
- Recent reviews. A steady flow of recent, specific reviews is one of the strongest signals for ranking in the map pack.
- Consistency across the web. Same name, address, and phone everywhere. Inconsistency makes Google trust you less.
- An active profile. Recent photos and posts signal a live business.
The website's role
The map pack handles much of "near me," but the regular results below it matter too - and that is where a website with town pages wins. A page built around "[service] in [your town]" helps you appear for the searches the map pack does not fully cover, and it backs up your credibility when the homeowner clicks to learn more.
What to do this week
Claim and complete your Google Business Profile with the right category and honest service areas. Make your name, address, and phone identical everywhere. Start asking every customer for a review. That free foundation often gets you into "near me" results within weeks - and a site with town pages extends your reach beyond what the profile alone can do. We build that site half.
